UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally injured in what is believed to be a targeted attack outside the New York Hilton Hotel in Manhattan. CCTV footage shows how the shooter waited for several minutes before committing an audacious act when Thompson was on his way to a business meeting.
Brian Thompson was a respected leader in the healthcare industry, known for his nearly twenty-year career at UnitedHealth Group. As CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, he has led critical programs that have left an indelible mark on healthcare policy and operations.
Later, surveillance footage showed the shooter, wearing a black hoodie and a gray backpack, standing in the area for several minutes. He ignored the morning stream of pedestrians, waiting for Brian to approach before striking.
As Brian was walking down the street in a blue suit, an armed man approached him from behind and fired several shots. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the attack began with Brian being stabbed in the back and calf.
After he stumbled, the shooter continued to shoot, approaching him. Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny noted that the gun appeared to be out of action for a short time, but the attacker quickly fixed the malfunction and resumed shooting.
Horrific moments were captured on surveillance video, including the moment when Brian fell to the ground. Three live 9mm cartridges and three spent cartridges were found at the scene.
