This year, the Oscars are taking a bold step by appointing Conan O’Brien to host the 97th ceremony. While some fans welcome this decision, critics have expressed doubts about his suitability to participate in the main Hollywood ceremony.
Emmy Award winner, comedian and former evening program host Conan O’Brien will take center stage at the 97th Academy Awards ceremony. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the news on Friday, prompting a mixed reaction online.
The announcement appeared on the Academy’s Instagram page, where a humorous video was posted showing O’Brien holding an Oscar statuette. In the video, O’Brien beams with delight, jokingly calling himself an “Oscar winner.” The voiceover quickly corrects him, explaining that he is the host, not the winner.
The caption to the short video reads: “Conan O’Brien officially becomes the host of the 97th Academy Awards ceremony! Watch the most grandiose evening in Hollywood on Sunday, March 2, at 19:00 live on ABC! #Oscar.”
While some were happy with this choice, others were not thrilled. Harsh criticisms flooded social media. One commenter wrote, “What a pity,” while another said, “Oh… It’s going to be terrible.” Some even promised not to watch the event at all
Others took a more cautious approach, acknowledging that O’Brien’s humor could show up anyway. “It may be really amazing, or it may not be at all,” one user noted.
Comments continued to come in, and many did not hold back. One person stated that he “won’t watch” because he “can’t stand O’Brien’s humor.” The man doubled over, recalling the time when Jay Leno returned to “The Tonight Show” after O’Brien “blew up,” but acknowledged that younger viewers might find his style funny.
Another commenter seemed taken aback, writing, “So they’re moving away from the tradition of inviting someone fun as a presenter.” Other commentators made harsh remarks: one said they would “have a headache that evening,” while another predicted: “He will be a real disaster. He has a strange sense of humor.
